“Though the doors were locked,
Jesus came and stood among them and said,
‘Peace be with you!'”
John 20:24-29

It could have been a different story: Easter aftermath.

Disbelieved by Thomas, denied and betrayed by Peter, abandoned by all of his disciples (not to mention Judas Iscariot), Jesus might have returned for revenge.

Instead, the Lord surprises his frightened followers, huddled as they are behind locked doors, and pronounces “Peace” upon them. He eats with them. He reveals himself to Thomas; he reinstates Peter. Jesus does not give up on the DOUBTERS and TRAITORS who belong to him. He reappears to restore and reconcile.

Within certain circles, it is easy to whip up the enthusiasm to be a brave and loyal Christ follower. Moral and spiritual pride come naturally to us. But even among us, we who count ourselves his followers, there is a continued need for rescue and forgiveness.

Two post-Resurrection stories, of two spiritual failures, warn us against putting faith in ourselves or each other. They highlight the astonishing grace, forgiveness, and relentless love, of the one who chooses and calls us. The good news is how faithful God is, especially when we are not.
