“Then he said, ‘Jesus, remember me
when you come into your kingdom.’
Jesus answered him,’Truly I tell you,
today you will be with me in paradise.'”
– Luke 23:35-43

The Gospels – Matthew, Mark, Luke, John – tell the story of Jesus on the cross. Together, they record a collection of Jesus’s sayings,  classically known as the “Seven Last Words From the Cross.” In November, we listened to the first word, “Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do.” This Sunday, we will listen to the second word, when Jesus responds to a plea for mercy from a dying thief with a promise of life together, in paradise.

This same promise is offered to us, readers of the Gospel, and anyone who turns to Jesus for mercy. What does it mean?
