SUNDAY
ZOOM CHURCH 10:30am
Each week, we get a little better at using Zoom. Launching Breakout Rooms for the first this past Sunday time was a little clumsy (my fault), yet seemed promising for fellowship. We will try again this week, seeing how it works at the end of our liturgy.
Our Gospel Text will be Luke 24:15. One aspect of the story we may not always notice, is the activity going on between the two disciples on the Road to Emmaus when Jesus appears. “As they talked and discussed these things with each other, Jesus himself came up and walked along with them.” Examining what had happened with each other, going down the road together, they encounter the Lord. He comes to them.
Is there something for us to learn here? Obviously, I think so. Let’s review this part of the story and consider what it might be saying, here and now.

Godly Play – From Our Storyteller:
For this week, I want to encourage everyone in the family to share their favorite Bible stories with each other. If able, have each person read their story from the Bible (or children’s bible); or if children are too young to read, they can retell the story in their own words. Go around the room and let each person have a turn sharing their favorite story, why it is their favorite, and what they think is most important about the story.
This will be a great opportunity for you as parents to get an insight into what your children are thinking and feeling about the Bible stories. It will also be a wonderful chance for your children to see the love that you have for the Bible. I know that I sometimes get so focused on teaching Jason the Bible stories that I forget to also share the joy and love that one can have for the stories as well.
As a plan B, if sharing stories with each other does not work for whatever reason (we have all been there), I do have a back-up story.
Jesus and the Miraculous Haul of Fish – John 21:1-14
This story of great haul of fish is told twice in the Bible but at different points in Jesus’ life. Luke tells a similar story at the beginning of Jesus’ ministry in chapter 5. The gospel of John has the story recounted here, after Jesus has risen from the dead. I specifically chose this story for two reasons. The first being simply that in the church calendar we are post-Easter and pre-Pentecost and that is where this story lands in John’s gospel. The second reason is that it is a story we can all relate to currently. These fishermen have been out all night, they are tired, but when they are just about to give up, a man from shore tells them to throw their net just one more time but over the opposite side. It is only after the miraculous haul that the disciples realize who the man on the shore is.
After retelling this story with your child(ren), you can ask the following wondering questions:
- I wonder where you might be in this story.
- I wonder how the disciples felt about throwing the net in again after a long night.
- I wonder what the most important part of this story is.
