This week, we take a break from fruit.
We will step back and take in a big picture view of church.

Among other things, churches are communities who learn and practice together. Sometimes, we learn by examining our practice. We talk about what it means to follow Jesus, generally, but also reflect on our own following of Jesus, specifically.

How are we doing – practicing postures of UP, IN, and OUT? What are ways we move from SOLITUDE with God, to COMMUNITY together, to stretch out and engage the WORLD? These are movements and postures of Jesus and the disciples; narratives of Mark 1:9-39 and Mark 9:2-29 provide good examples. Jesus connects UP; gathers IN; moves and empowers OUT. These are all SACRED SPACES.

Royal Huddleston Burpee, a Phd candidate of the Teachers College, Columbia University around 1940, invented an exercise to measure fitness and motor activity. It became so popular, the U.S. Army embraced it as one of their “Daily Dozen” exercises and tests. It begins with vertical motion, followed by a squat, followed by a horizontal stretch. Hard to do a lot of these in quick succession (I have heard). What is this exercise called?

THE “BURPEE”

Does this UP-IN-OUT physical exercise – named after it’s inventor – really work? The Crossfit crowd seems to think so.

What about the faith practice version of UP-IN-OUT?
How are you doing with this?
How is Emmaus Road doing with this?
Have COVID-19, social isolation, or the Black Lives Matter movement, changed things?

Is Jesus still calling people to follow?
Is the Holy Spirit still empowering and guiding?
Is God still saving?
