“Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these. Truly I tell you, anyone who will not receive the kingdom of God like a little child will never enter it.”
Mark 10:13-16

Jesus liked speaking this way. We recall the time he told Nicodemus – a wise, important member of the respected religious establishment – that “no one can see the kingdom of God unless they are born again” (Jn 3). Quite often, the disciples, or the crowd to whom Jesus said these things, seemed confused or annoyed.

What about you?

This Sunday happens to be Mother’s Day. Emmaus Road does not neglect the Fifth Commandment! But even as we celebrate and share gratitude for the ways mothers love and care for us, we will also be paying attention to those people mothers are most concerned about: little children. Confounding our conventions, the Lord challenges us to consider the ways little children take the lead, in teaching us things about our relationships with God and each other. You might say the kingdom belongs to kids.
