“Now that I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet,
you also should wash one another’s feet.
I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you.”
“A new command I give you: Love one another.
As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples if you love one another.” (see John 13:14-15; 34-35)
I do not prefer removing my socks in front of strangers. Do you?
We marvel at the breadth and scope of Jesus’s love for us, including the demonstration of humble service around the table of the Last Supper. But sometimes, let us confess, we may want this kind of activity to take place only between us and the Lord. We feel less excited about serving one another. But that is precisely what Jesus has in mind.
In what ways are we called to “take our socks off” and serve one another? How are we called to love each other as fellow disciples and travelers in faith? When the world sees us, do they know GOD by OUR love? Do they see GOD when they see US?
