“But when they looked up,
they saw that the stone, which was very large,
had been rolled away.”

Mark 16:4

IT IS STILL EASTER; it is still the Easter season in the Church calendar. It may not feel like much of a “season,” the way Advent/Christmas feels, because we are not feeling pressure to buy stuff or put up lights for several weeks. But if you follow a traditional celebration of key moments from the Gospels, we continue to highlight the Resurrection all the way until May 23rd, Pentecost Sunday.

HOW DO WE DO THAT? One way is to remind each other to “Look up!” As “Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James, and Salome,”looked up to discover an empty tomb, and eventually a living Lord, so we need to look up, together, to see what’s going on. We need this posture, this vision, especially in a world, and in a time, when heavy weights block our path, when death seems to reign.

ONE OF THE QUESTIONS I have been inviting Emmaus Road to ponder lately, flowing from the origin story of our church in Luke 24, Emmaus Road, is this: “Have you heard the news; Jesus is not dead, but alive?” Have you realized it, and accepted what the presence of a living God means in your life? Have you realized our material, physical death, is not the end of us nor our loved ones? Have you looked up? Are we practiced, in our relationships as fellow disciples, at the art of asking this question, in the right way, at the right time?
