Gentleness – Oct 25th
“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened,
Matthew 11:28-30 (NIV)
and I will give you rest.
Take my yoke upon you and learn from me,
for I am GENTLE and humble in heart,
and you will find rest for your souls.
For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”
IS GOD GENTLE? If Jesus, Son of God, is any indication of the character of God, then yes, our Almighty Creator, is gentle.
But do we like that? Surrounded by jerks and villains, we enjoy fantasizing about God’s wrath; we pray God, the righteous judge, would wipe them out.
Fortunately for us, our multifaceted God is revealed, especially by Jesus, to be loving, kind, patient, and gentle. Yes, he turns tables and rebukes the proud. But for our own sake, it is good the Lord approaches us with gentleness, even when we do not fully appreciate this about his character.
Last Sunday we spent time learning about the spiritual fruit of FAITHFULNESS. This week, we spend time reflecting on how the fruit of the Spirit of GENTLENESS factors into relationships across the body of Christ. As we enter our breakout rooms, let us consider these questions:
- Have you benefitted from someone else’s gentleness?
- Do we see God as gentle?
- How can a gentle approach affect the outcome of an unresolved conflict, or confrontation?
