Who Is In Those Tents? – Jan 24th

“When did we see you a stranger and invite you in,
or needing clothes and clothe you?”

Matthew 25:31-46

HOLMAN ROAD PLAZA is a convenient little cluster of businesses blocks away from my house. There is a combined Chevron McDonalds; Tweedy & Pop’s Ace Hardware; Turtle Coffee. Also, some people live there….in TENTS.

Q: WHO IS IN THOSE TENTS?

You see them near you, too. What are their names? How did they land there? How do they survive? Should we care? How should we respond? Tomorrow, our learning time will be about answering this question, about who is in those tents, from a specific angle. We often speak in generalities regarding the “Homeless,” “Unsheltered,” etc. Sociologists, journalists, advocates, and detractors, all supply answers. But as agents of the Gospel, who they are is of particular relevance to the LORD, to you, and to me.

We asked Aurora Commons; they answered. Much of what is most needed for neighbors on the streets, in tent encampments, remains the same as last time. Here is the most recent list:

  • winter men’s clothing items and shoes
  • women’s coats and undergarments (new)
  • socks
  • wound care – first aid – items
  • outdoor gear (tents, tarps, sleeping bags) they ordered 100 tents and sleeping bags before Christmas with COVID funding and have already given them all away.
  • AMAZON online wish list/direct delivery link (you buy online; Amazon delivers to Aurora Commons)
  • Feel free to stop by and drop off items in person at church, 10:30am-Noon, Sunday the 31st.

To gain a better understanding of the issues facing unsheltered neighbors and those trying to help, listen to a KNKX podcast, Outsiders.
