Right Hand of God – Feb 7th

“But when he saw the wind, he was afraid and,
beginning to sink, cried out, ‘Lord, save me!’
Immediately Jesus reached out his hand and caught him.

see Matthew 14:29-31

“DEXTERA DOMINI” may sound like the utterance of a wizard from Harry Potter, but it is not. It is latin for “the right hand of God,” one of the most common anthropomorphisms found in Scripture. It has inspired great works of art across the ages.

Why should you care? Well, the Latin translation is not so important. But the powerful and protective grasp of God, extended in grace, symbolically depicted by the Prophets and Psalmist as “God’s right hand,” is Good News for us right now. The Lord combines righteousness and the will to rescue, taking hold of the drowning. This is the Gospel for the faithful whose feet are slipping.
